March 2018

Therapeutic Yoga Available

As of March 2018, Crossroads Counseling is adding Therapeutic Yoga Treatment to their ever-growing list of services offered.

Yoga based interventions have been shown to have a multitude of benefits including regulating the nervous system, improving sleep, increasing stress tolerance, and improving overall health and well-being.

Our newly hired counselor, Debbie Hunt, LPC, has been extensively trained in therapeutic yoga techniques for treating anxiety, depression, childhood trauma, ADHD, caregiver fatigue, and general stress. Debbie has received certificates for completing specialized training in Trauma-Sensitive Yoga, as well.

Therapeutic yoga uses techniques such as: deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, meditation and mindfulness practices, visualization, and gentle yoga poses.  There are options for chair-based practice or mat-based practice, making yoga accessible for everyone.

Buddy Bench

On May 1, 2017, Crossroads donated our second Buddy Bench, this time to Silas Willard Elementary School. We are hoping to do the same for every elementary school in Galesburg. The Buddy Bench is a special bench placed on the playground where students can sit when they are having a rough day. If they are being bullied; feeling left out; needing to cool down; fighting with a friend; or feeling lonely, sad, scared, or worried; students can sit on the bench. When other students see someone sitting on the bench, they can go sit with them and be their buddy.

Because reducing bullying is one of the target purposes of the Buddy Bench, the counselors from Crossroads reviewed some helpful tips on how to deal with being bullied and how to defend someone else who is being bullied. The Silas Willard students participated fully in the presentation and we had a lot of fun.

We encouraged this take away message:

1. Every BUDDY needs a BUDDY

2. Every BUDDY is some BUDDY

3. Every BUDDY can be some BUDDY's BUDDY

New Clinicians

Crossroads Counseling continues to expand to meet the growing needs of our clients and the community which we care so deeply about. As of January 2017, we have six clinicians and a financial coach who offer a wide variety of services and expertise. In the last few months, we have added a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, Tasha Easley, who has a great deal of experience in community mental health. In addition, on staff we now have another psychologist, Sara O'Brien, who has extensive training and preparation through her vigorous doctoral program and post-doctoral work. We are pleased to expand our psychological testing and counseling services. If you are interested in learning more, please refer to the "About Us" tab on the website or call the office to ask questions or to set up an appointment with one of our talented clinicians.
